Imperceptible Flashes of Light

Imperceptible Flashes of Light

To go to the ends of the earth to talk ... to see people before for talking and to see people after for talking ... this is a monstrous image. It’s a cheap rupture ...a trip is not enough to create a real rupture. If you want rupture, then do something other than travel. Nomads are people who don’t travel.. .. Nothing is more immobile than a nomad. Nothing travels less than a nomad. But there are trips that are true ruptures .... In a sense, I feel no need to move. All the intensities that I have are immobile intensities .... There is a geo-philosophy, I mean, there are profound countries, my very own foreign lands that I don’t find by traveling
— (Gilles Deleuze, "V as Voyage" in Gilles Deleuze .from A to Z, Cambridge: MIT, 2011).

To travel without moving in imperceptible flashes of light. This is what it means to be nomadic; and the complexities of our current political situation needs nomads. In his essay Toward a Critical Nomadism Jay Hetrick says that “the whole point of nomadism is to attempt to resist the imperial, hegemonic form of what [Felix] Guattari called Integrated World Capitalism by allowing minor subjectivities and languages to flourish at the peripheries. Nomadic becoming resists boundaries, it is the “unpartitioned and common land outside the boundaries of the polis,” where the space is traversed without becoming divided. This is not a physical movement but an internal movement the nomad is she who does not move. Nomads "do not move.  They are nomads by dint of not moving, not migrating, of holding a smooth space that they refuse to leave, that they leave only in order to conquer and die. Voyage in place: that is the name of all intensities, even if they also develop in extension (Deleuze and Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus, p. 482.).”

This, of course, all sounds heavily theoretical — but it is not. The kind of revolution required to challenge the dominant and despotic economical-political machine that is late integrated capitalism will not be marches or protests or petitions (helpful though they can be). It begins when we find a new line of flight, a trajectory of escape. A line of flight from the ideological slight of hand: that the narratives late integrated capitalism, rarely, if ever, speak of the present; they always refer to the past but more importantly speak of a supposedly better future. Stealing the love of oneself as we are and offering it back to us, all for the price of a product (Berger, 1972: 134). The perfect future, that the advert sells, available in the present for a cost, is a future that is constantly being deferred, because when got we realise that the future it sold us immediately becomes the present, and that the present is no longer good enough because, it becomes who we are now, and in a future-present world now is never good enough; the age of the perpetual upgrade; in which we are never present, always moving in bright perceptible flashes of social display.

May we travel without moving in imperceptible flashes of light.
